This book was released on 2004 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: This collection of essays includes papers given at the Second European Orthodox-Western Symposium of Biblical Scholars in Rila, Bulgaria. It also contains summaries of the discussions which took place in the various groups and formulates the different perspectives in the dialog between orthodox and Western biblical scholars. The book deals with the Old Testament in the Christian tradition, the Old Testament in the New Testament and in ancient Judaism, the canon of the Old Testament as well as Messianic texts and their Christian interpretation from an orthodox, Catholic and Protestant perspective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines the varieties and continuities of ethical exhortations and ideals in the Jewish and Christian traditions (c. 200 BCE-100 CE) that fall under the rubric of non-retaliation. One of the principal conclusions of this thought-provoking work is that a critical factor in determining the shape of non-retaliatory ethics is whether the exhortation is applied to relations within the local and/or elect community or to relations with oppressors of the elect community. It becomes apparent also that the non-retaliatory ethic of the NT stands solidly in the tradition of non-retaliatory ethics in Early Judaism.

Throughout the book, numerous features provide windows into the first-century world. Nearly 500 full color photos, charts, maps, and drawings have been carefully selected. Additional features include sidebars that integrate the book's material with issues of interpretation, discussion questions, and bibliographies.

Download Free The Great Controversy PDF by Tom de Bruin Full Book and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2014-12-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Testaments of the Twelve Patriarchs (T12P), one of the longest texts of the so-called “Old Testament Pseudepigrapha,” presents the fictitious farewell speeches that the twelve sons of Jacob held on their respective deathbeds. Tom de Bruin examines these twelve monologues as literary products in order to understand the function of the text for the setting in which it was composed. He approaches T12P from three directions: an analysis of the paraenetic parts, a discussion of the anthropology, and a comparative examination of other contemporaneous works documenting a world-view similar to T12P. These three approaches merge into a detailed discussion about the reasoning behind the admonition in T12P, and identifies the fundamental message of the text, namely that each person stands between the forces of good and evil and that this person is called to constantly decide which way to follow. Though T12P is still familiar with the apocalyptic origin and plays with the cosmological implications of this 'great controversy', the text clearly puts the emphasis on the battle inside each individual. It is thereby an important witness for reinterpreting and reapplying apocalyptic traditions through ethicizing them and focusing on the individual. Such an individualistic application of the 'great controversy' theme can be found in a number of other (mostly Christian) works, revealing a similar understanding of mankind’s existence and development as in T12P. The analysis of the ethical reappropriation of apocalyptic traditions in T12P provides important insights into the foundations of early Christian ethics, ancient anthropology, and the Jewish and Christian understanding of the struggle between good and evil.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Hebrews is arguing that God himself has brought about the fulfillment of these institutions through his Son's priesthood, his once-for-all sacrifice, and the new covenant he inaugurated in the last days. These new institutions are never denied the Jews. In fact, the context of the epistle presumes that these are primarily for the Jews, considering that the author was speaking to a Jewish-Christian community. The author is not arguing for the abandonment by God of the Jewish people, but rather for the abandonment of the shadowy means by which God's people drew near to him. It is here we can speak of a qualified supersessionism. According to the author of Hebrews, the Levitical priesthood, the Mosaic covenant, and the Levitical sacrifices have been superseded by Jesus' priesthood, the new covenant, and Jesus' once-for-all sacrifice. However, we conclude that the polemical passages in Hebrews do not promote hatred of the Jews, nor do they advocate the destruction of the Jewish people. Rather, the author of Hebrews stresses the fulfillment of specific Jewish institutions for the benefit of the Jews. It is this idea of fulfillment that rules out the charge that the epistle promotes the supercession of the Jewish people. Because of God's great love for his people, he has provided a superior way by which his people can draw near to him. --from the Conclusion

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: The collected essays in this volume deal with the current discussion on the meaning of Jesus' death. The authors look at this topic from various perspectives: the question of pagan, Old Testament, Jewish background, and different interpretations in the New Testament, reception in the early church and in the Gospel of Thomas, and systematic theological contributions. The volume makes a significant contribution to the ongoing debate on the interpretation of Jesus' death and its meaning for Christian theology.
