Book excerpt: In this suspense thriller from the author of Time Release, a California cop investigates a developer’s murder as his world catches fire. The dry season has hit the Inland Empire of California, depleting the ponds and revealing the muddy grave of Paul Dwyer. Dwyer lorded over Los Colmas, a small town he aspired to make big by building mansions for wealthy LA commuters. Some viewed him as a savior, providing construction jobs for locals. Others believed he was ruining their beautiful, close-knit community. But who was angry enough to kill him? Local cop Ron Starke is overwhelmed by the list of suspects and plagued by a difficult captain who is demanding results. Starke investigates Paul Dwyer’s dirty money and handshake deals gone wrong. Then there’s Dwyer’s widow, Shelby, who has quite a few secrets, like who her husband really was behind closed doors. And what she knows about the murder… As the season’s wildfires intensify to historic levels and surge towards Los Colmas, Starke must discover who killed Dwyer before all the evidence burns and the whole town is erased. “A page-turner with a kicker at the end…Intricately plotted and full of character, this one is a great ride that burns with the intensity of a California wildfire.”—Michael Connelly, #1 New York Times–bestselling author “Fast as a bullet and bristling with suspense. Part Hitchcock, part Law and Order, all terrific.”—T. Jefferson Parker, New York Times–bestselling author of The Room of White Fire As the season’s wildfires intensify to historic levels and surge towards Los Colmas, Starke must discover who killed Dwyer before all the evidence burnsand the whole town is erased. "Combustion is exactly what I love in a mystery—fast as a bullet and bristling with suspense. Part Hitchcock, part 'Law and Order,' all terrific."—T. Book excerpt: Moses' third book, the Book of Leviticus, is full of the Lord Jesus Christ. In the tabernacle we see Christ, in the priesthood we see Christ, in the sacrifices and the diverse offerings, our Saviour can be traced in type, picture, symbol and figure by all who have eyes to see. In this present work, our author, Pastor Don Fortner, is keen not to let pass unnoticed any opportunity to discover Christ. Herein lies the value and usefulness of this new work Discovering Christ in Leviticus. When the Master told His listeners they should 'search the scriptures', He was speaking of the Old Testament and said, 'they are they which testify of me'. Specifically, he declared, 'Moses ... wrote of me' and here in these twenty-seven chapters of Leviticus we rejoice to find confirmation of Jesus' statement as our Lord is portrayed to an eminent degree by His servant Moses. Leviticus contains very little by way of history and differs noticeably in this respect from Genesis and Exodus. Yet the Voice of Jehovah echoes and re-echoes throughout the book when clear commands and precise conditions for approaching God are set forth. Here God tells His people how and when and where He will meet with them. Men and women should take note of this. If we would know God we must come by the way He prescribes. God told Jeremiah, 'ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart. And I will be found of you, saith the LORD'. Leviticus shows us how. God will be sought after by men but He shall be found only in the place He specifies, only by the way He determines and only through the blood of a perfect sacrifice. That sacrifice is His Son, Jesus Christ. Throughout Leviticus we are constantly reminded of this book's divine origin and authority. The LORD, the Living Word, frequently addresses His servant with the words, 'And the LORD called unto Moses, and spake unto him'. We see this in chapter one verse one, and in similar fashion some fifty more times. This is absolutely God's enduring word and while the sacrifices and rituals have long since ceased, the Truth behind the types is today as meaningful and important for a proper understanding of the Gospel as it was when it was first spoken. Last year shortly after completing this book Pastor Fortner passed into the presence of His Lord and Saviour. We are indebted to him for this labour of love on behalf of the church of Christ. It is also appropriate to acknowledge the contribution of his dear wife, Shelby, in its editing and checking. It is our prayer that the Lord use these pages from the pen of His faithful servant to encourage the Lord's sheep and challenge those yet outside of the fold of God. May our friend's burden to lift up his Saviour in the written and preached word continue to meet with success.

Book excerpt: "If someone had told me years ago that I would create these enormous levels of both appreciation and hostility in my ordained life, I would have been dumbfounded, shocked, and probably deeply hurt. How did it happen? What created the twin emotions of praise and anger, of gratitude and fear? What forces pushed me, compelled me, or led me to play my particular role in the struggle to make the Christian church respond to the issues of our century and indeed to open new dimensions of spirituality to the citizens of this century? That is the story I seek to tell." John Shelby Spong has spent a lifetime struggling to discover and create a more just, loving, and authentic Christian faith. Throughout his career as an Episcopal priest and bishop, he has inspired praise and gratitude among the marginalized Christians whose causes he has championed, as well as hostile resistance from traditional and conservative Christians whom he has so boldly challenged. Here I Stand reveals the private side of this very public figure, as Bishop Spong tells the story of the people and events that shaped his thoroughly contemporary yet deeply biblical theology and his commitment to liberal Christian values. Early in his life, Spong witnessed injustices that were instrumental in awakening his moral consciousness. Growing up in the American south of the 1930s, Spong spent his childhood in an environment of racism, fundamentalism, sexism, and homophobia. The church of his time was no exception; its exclusionary attitudes and practices struck the young Southerner as contradictory to the Christianity he encountered in the Bible and heard preached from the pulpit and taught in Sunday school. Rather than becoming disillusioned with the church and dropping out, Spong has devoted himself to reforming it, working to integrate women, blacks, gays, lesbians, and other marginalized Christians fully into the faith community better known for rejecting or marginalizing them. In the process, he has challenged the views of leaders such as Jerry Falwell, John Cardinal 0' Connor, and his own Episcopal hierarchy. He has been honored by many as a hero, while enduring harsh reactions from fundamentalists and those wedded to the status quo. Through it all, Bishop Spong has remained committed to his role as a shepherd to every member of the Christian flock. His courageous efforts have made him an inspirational symbol of a Christian church truly worthy of Jesus and the standard bearer for those who strive to be both contemporary, thinking persons and faithful, enlightened Christians.
