Download Free Helen of Troy PDF by Ruby Blondell Full Book and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The story of Helen of Troy has its origins in ancient Greek epic and didactic poetry, more than 2500 years ago, but it remains one of the world's most galvanizing myths about the destructive power of beauty. Much like the ancient Greeks, our own relationship to female beauty is deeply ambivalent, fraught with both desire and danger. We worship and fear it, advertise it everywhere yet try desperately to control and contain it. No other myth evocatively captures this ambivalence better than that of Helen, daughter of Zeus and Leda, and wife of the Spartan leader Menelaus. Her elopement with (or abduction by) the Trojan prince Paris "launched a thousand ships" and started the most famous war in antiquity. For ancient Greek poets and philosophers, the Helen myth provided a means to explore the paradoxical nature of female beauty, which is at once an awe-inspiring, supremely desirable gift from the gods, essential to the perpetuation of a man's name through reproduction, yet also grants women terrifying power over men, posing a threat inseparable from its allure. Many ancients simply vilified Helen for her role in the Trojan War but there is much more to her story than that: the kidnapping of Helen by the Athenian hero Theseus, her sibling-like relationship with Achilles, the religious cult in which she was worshipped by maidens and newlyweds, and the variant tradition which claims she never went to Troy at all but was whisked away to Egypt and replaced with a phantom. In this book, author Ruby Blondell offers a fresh look at the paradoxes and ambiguities that Helen embodies. Moving from Homer and Hesiod to Sappho, Aeschylus, Euripides, and others, Helen of Troy shows how this powerful myth was continuously reshaped and revisited by the Greeks. By focusing on this key figure from ancient Greece, the book both extends our understanding of that culture and provides a fascinating perspective on our own." - Besedilo s knjižnega zavihka.
Download Free Penelope : Princess of Lakonia PDF by S(altonstall) W(eld) Bardot Full Book and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2011-09-22 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is a Supplement to a book of the same title heading - a fictional colloquy about the comings-of-age of Penelope, her sister Ipthime and her first cousins born into their royal House of Oebalos. The biography of Penelope is addressed for the difficulties of its analysis of just where her birthplace was: Aetolia or Lakonia? The Supplement also places the prehistorical analysis upon the biography of her father Ikarios and what else can be known as verifiable about her sister Iphthime. The major episodes of the sisters' girlhood years, as told by Penelope in Colloquy, are also set against the culture of the Late Helladic Greeks as we can best know them in broad setting of Lakonia, the precursor region to Lacedaemonia . The content is both culturally anthropological and and ethnological about the forbears of the natives whom the Spartans would later dominate throughout the 1st millenium BC.

Download Free The Odyssey PDF by Homer Full Book and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2008-10-07 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most translations of The Odyssey are in the kind of standard verse form believed typical of high-serious composition in the ancient world. Yet some scholars believe the epic was originally composed in a less formal, phrase-by-phrase prosody. Charles Stein employs the latter approach in this dramatic, and in some ways truer, version. Famous episodes such as the sirens, Scylla and Charybdis, and the Cyclops, are rendered with previously unseen energy and empathy. The poem’s second half—where Odysseus, returned home to take revenge on his wife’s suitors—has extraordinarily subtle, “novelistic” features that are made more transparent in this version. There is also a special feel for the archaic dimensions of Homer—the world of gods and their complex relations to Fate and Being that other translators tend to deemphasize in order to make the poem feel “modern.” Most versions exclude or minimize the magical aspects of the poem, but Stein gives these elements full play, so that the spirit of a universe predating the classical era shines through. This vibrant version of The Odyssey shows readers not only what the Greeks thought about their gods but the gods themselves. Summaries preceding each chapter and a list of recommended websites help expand the experience.
Download Free Claudio Monteverdi’s Venetian Operas PDF by Ellen Rosand Full Book and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Claudio Monteverdi’s Venetian Operas features chapters by a group of scholars and performers of varied backgrounds and specialties, who confront the various questions raised by Monteverdi’s late operas from an interdisciplinary perspective. The premise of the volume is the idea that constructive dialogue between musicologists and musicians, stage directors and theater historians, as well as philologists and literary critics can shed new light on Monteverdi’s two Venetian operas (and their respective librettos, by Badoaro and Busenello), not only at the levels of textual criticism, historical exegesis, and dramaturgy, but also with regard to concrete choices of performance, staging, and mise-en-scène. Following an Introduction setting up the interdisciplinary agenda, the volume comprises two main parts: ‘Contexts and Sources’ deals with the historical, philosophical, and aesthetic contexts of the works - librettos and scores; 'Performance and Interpretation’ offers critical and historical insights regarding the casting, singing, reciting, staging, and conducting of the two operas. This volume will appeal to scholars and researchers in Opera Studies and Music History as well as be of interest to early music performers and all those involved with presenting opera on stage.
