Download Free I Was a Teenage Critical Theorist: Zappa, Nagai, Romero PDF by Marco Maurizi Full Book and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-08-06 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book results from my teenage fixation on monsters and mutations. If beauty is the trademark of oppression and order, deformity is the aesthetical precognition of revolution (monstrum means 'wonder', no less than 'horrible shape'). Monstrosity is a logic of disgregation, a way of naming the new; that's why revolution can find appropriate expression only in its open shape: Zappa's mutations, Romero's zombies, Nagai's robots. Contrary to Pomo populism, though, the author knows the difference between Art and Revolution, and investigates the possibilities of revolutionary art under capitalism, in an on-going confrontation with the perverse and polymorphous joys of his teenage heroes. Zappa, Romero and Nagai not only provide us with the central insight that phantasy is a way of seeing the world AS IT IS; they reveal the impotence of every Critical Theorist unable to take part in the event criticised.

Download Free An Inventory of Archaic and Classical Poleis PDF by Mogens Herman Hansen Full Book and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-11-11 with total page 1413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first ever documented study of the 1,035 identifiable Greek city states (poleis) of the Archaic and Classical periods (c.650-325 BC). Previous studies of the Greek polis have focused on Athens and Sparta, and the result has been a view of Greek society dominated by Sophokles', Plato's, and Demosthenes' view of what the polis was. This study includes descriptions of Athens and Sparta, but its main purpose is to explore the history andorganization of the thousand other city states. The main part of the book is a regionally organized inventory of all identifiable poleis covering the Greek world from Spain to the Caucasus and from the Crimea to Libya. This inventory is the work of 47 specialists, and is divided into 46 chapters, each covering a region. Each chapter contains an account of the region, a list of second-order settlements, and an alphabetically ordered description of the poleis. This description covers such topics as polis status, territory, settlement pattern, urban centre, city walls and monumental architecture, population, military strength, constitution, alliance membership, colonization, coinage, and Panhellenic victors. The first part of the book is a description of the method and principles applied in the construction of the inventory and an analysis of some of the results to be obtained by a comparative study of the 1,035 poleis included in it. The ancient Greek concept of polis is distinguished from the modern term `city state', which historians use to cover many other historic civilizations, from ancient Sumeria to the West African cultures absorbed by the nineteenth-century colonializingpowers. The focus of this project is what the Greeks themselves considered a polis to be.

Download Free A Commentary on Horace: Odes: Book II PDF by R. G. M. Nisbet Full Book and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1991-05-03 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first three books of Horace's Odes were issued together, apparently in the latter part of 23 BC. The second book, however, has a coherence of its own in terms of subject matter, tone of voice, and arrangement. In particular there is a predominance of poems concerned with philosophy, with conduct, and with friendship. This commentary provides the reader with the background knowledge of conventional forms and topics needed to appreciate fully every aspect of the poems. In particular word-play, literary parallels, and stylistic nuances are highlighted and discussed. The commentary may be used in conjunction with the Oxford Classical Text of Horace edited by E. C. Wickham.
