Download Free Comic Sense PDF by Thomas Pughe Full Book and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 197 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea for this study came to me in the course of my reading of innova tive US-American! fiction of the last three decades. I observed that much of it is cast in the comic mode - or, more precisely, that there seems to be in contemporary fiction an affinity between 'innovation' and 'the comic' and that this affinity, furthermore, appears to be characteristic of postmo dernism. It is obvious, at the same time, that comic has become an elusive and, more often than not, a disputable category. Frederick Karl, in his sur vey of American Fictions 1940-1980, maintains, for instance, that much comic writing consists in ridicule that lacks deeper intellectual and cul tural roots. "Wit and mockery," he notes, "by themselves have little lasting value. Even in the best of such fiction, Gravity's Rainbow, one is made aware of attenuated skits stiched onto previous segments, rather than baked in by a defined point of view. " (Karl: 27) Such assessments of course challenge my view that the comic is in significant ways connected with what is innovative in postmodernist US-American fiction. Yet the term comic -or related terms like humour, parody, irony and so fort- is regularly and heavily employed in discussions or reviews of con temporary fiction.

Download Free Robert Coover and the Generosity of the Page PDF by Stephane Vanderhaeghe Full Book and published by Deep Vellum Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-05 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Coover and the Generosity of the Page is an unconventional study of Robert Coover's work from his early masterpiece The Origin of the Brunists (1966) to the recent Noir (2010). Written in the second person, it offers a self-reflexive investigation into the ways in which Coover's stories often challenge the reader to resist the conventions of sense-making and even literary criticism. By portraying characters lost in surroundings they often fail to grasp, Coover's work playfully enacts a "(melo)drama of cognition" that mirrors the reader's own desire to interpret and make sense of texts in unequivocal ways. This tendency in Coover's writing is indicative of a larger refusal of the ready-made, of the once-and-for-all or the authoritative, celebrating instead, in its generosity, the widening of possibilities—thus inevitably forcing the reader-critic to acknowledge the arbitrariness and artificiality of her responses.
Download Free Partner and I PDF by Susan Ware Full Book and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1989-09-10 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating exploration of the private and public worlds of Molly Dewson, America's original female political boss. In the first biography ever written of Dewson, Susan Ware not only examines her political career as a trusted member of the Roosevelt team throughout the New Deal but also considers how Dewson's fifty-two year partnership with Polly Porter and her woman-centered existence strengthened her success as a politician. "Susan Ware's excellent biography of Molly Dewson restores one of Franklin Roosevelt's chums and an irrepressible battler for women in politics to her proper place in the history of the New Deal."--Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. "Rich, readable, and intriguing biography."--Estelle B. Freedman, Women's Review of Books "Readers should welcome Ware's spotlight on Dewson, which widens to disclose wonderfully human views of FDR and Eleanor and brings to life many virtually forgotten feminists of an era that threatens to fade into gray."--Publishers Weekly "Provides a lively and refreshingly concrete sense of everyday activities in reform and political circles. ... A wonderful account of the model of a modern political woman."--Elizabeth Fox-Genovese, Times Literary Supplement Susan Ware is assistant professor of history at New York University, where she also coordinates the Women's History Program.

Download Free Presidential Confidential PDF by John Boertlein Full Book and published by Clerisy Press. This book was released on 2010-09-29 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presidential Confidential serves up the behind-the-scenes stories that the schoolbooks left out -- deliciously juicy stories like secret (and sometimes sordid) affairs, dirty tricks, criminal acts, embarrassing moments, and much more. From George Washington stepping out on Martha to George Bush stepping on practically everyone, it delivers the sex, scandal, murder, and mayhem in the dishy style of a 1950s scandal mag. Author John Boertlein takes an irreverent, no-cow-is-too-sacred-to-be-spared approach, covering the mishaps of the great and not-so-great with equal relish: shady financial deals and shadier friends, famous drunks and infamous relatives, assassinations and assassination attempts. The stories range from in-depth treatments to short sidebars, making this an entertaining and informative read that can be sampled on the run or enjoyed at length. Loaded with pictures and fun facts, and featuring an attractive, stylized layout, Presidential Confidential is a riotous romp through the Oval Office.

Download Free THE MARY FRANCES STORY BOOK - 37 Illustrated Stories among the Story People PDF by Anon E. Mouse Full Book and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2018-08-30 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All the stories in this book contain lessons; they teach something about cooking and sewing, knitting and crocheting, housekeeping and gardening, and first-aid—and tell a story, too; but The Mary Frances Story Book is all story, in fact 37 exquisitely illustrated stories. Jane Eyre Fryer has drawn these stories from many sources and retold them in her way. On a summer afternoon Mary Frances took a holiday and sailed away across the blue water to an island—an island formed by the top of a coral mountain resting in a sea of blue—a brighter blue than the water anywhere in the world. The island itself and the roofs of the houses were coral white, with palm, banana and mahogany tree encased in green. The breezes that blew are the warm, soft breezes of the southern sun. This island is the “enchanted island” of the good story-tellers which Mary Frances, and now all children, are allowed to visit. The story people who live there believed in truth and beauty, and courage and kindness, and these are the theme of all their stories. As may be imagined, when Mary Frances came home she had not only one, but many new stories to tell; and they are now written in this book. This volume is sure to keep you and your young ones enchanted for hours, if not because of the quantity, then their quality. They will have you coming back for more time and again. ============ KEYWORDS/TAGS: fairy tales, folklore, myths, legends, children’s stories, childrens stories, bygone era, fairydom, fairy kingdom, ethereal, fairy land, classic stories, children’s bedtime stories, happy place, happiness, laughter, Sea Shore, Ferry, Pirate’s Cat, the Lost Story, Land Ahoy, Old Witch, Iron Chain, Curtain, Search, Find, Chase, Punishment, The Bubble Story, Anon, First Day, Mischievous, Anna, Peter Diamonds, Toads, Macé’s Fairy Tales, Magic Necklace, Cat, Carrots, Brahmin, Tiger, Jackal, Hindu, Folk Tales, Red Dragon, Poems, Crow, Twins, Tiny, Adventures In Tiny Town, Lock-Up, Adopt, Discover, Fire, Adventures, Saves, Baby, Life, Shopping, Mother, Second Day, Magic Mask, Closing Door, Maud Lindsay, Tom, Well, Neil Forest, Gloomy Gus, Christmas Cat, Alfred Westfall, Patty, Pitcher, Crowquill’s, Magic Circle, Wonderful Pitcher, Well Dressed, Stranger, Trouble, Third Day, Sir Galahad, Sir Thomas Malory, King Arthur, Knights Of The Round Table, Order Of Knighthood, The Sword In The Stone, Perilous Seat, The Sword Of Balin Le Savage, Quest, Holy Grail, White Shield, Red Cross, Sir Launcelot, Sir Percival, Attack, Gentlewoman, Mysterious Ship, Sword Of The Strange Belt, Risk, Knight In White Armor, Achieves, Quest, Bears Across The Sea, Passing Of Sir Galahad, Sir Bors, Camelot, Sir Launfal, James Russell Lowell, Fourth Day, Music, Bewitched, Hartley Richards, Bob Three Foes, Father Pan, Revenge, Ann, Catch A Thief. Download Free Devil's Garden PDF by Ace Atkins Full Book and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the critically acclaimed, award-nominated author comes a new noir crime classic about one of the most notorious trials in American history. Critics called Ace Atkins's Wicked City "gripping, superb" (Library Journal), "stunning" (The Tampa Tribune), "terrific" (Associated Press), "riveting" (Kirkus Reviews), "wicked good" (Fort Worth Star-Telegram), and "Atkins' best novel" (The Washington Post). But Devil's Garden is something else again. San Francisco, September 1921: Silent-screen comedy star Roscoe "Fatty" Arbuckle is throwing a wild party in his suite at the St. Francis Hotel: girls, jazz, bootleg hooch... and a dead actress named Virginia Rappe. The D.A. says it was Arbuckle who killed her-crushing her under his weight-and brings him up on manslaughter charges. William Randolph Hearst's newspapers stir up the public and demand a guilty verdict. But what really happened? Why do so many people at the party seem to have stories that conflict? Why is the prosecution hiding witnesses? Why are there body parts missing from the autopsied corpse? Why is Hearst so determined to see Fatty Arbuckle convicted? In desperation, Arbuckle's defense team hires a Pinkerton agent to do an investigation of his own and, they hope, discover the truth. The agent's name is Dashiell Hammett, and he's the book's narrator. What he discovers will change American legal history-and his own life-forever. "The historical accuracy isn't what elevates Atkins' prose to greatness," said The Tampa Tribune. "It's his ability to let these characters breathe in a way that few authors could ever imagine. He doesn't so much write them as unleash them upon the page." You will not soon forget the extraordinary characters and events in Devil's Garden.
